MN: Pioli could change Milan’s formation to cope with Leao’s absence

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan coach Stefano Pioli could change formation against Napoli in order to cope with the absence of Rafael Leao who is suspended, a report suggests.

As has been reported by Milan News today, the Italian coach has two clear options as to how he can replace Leao in the team without having either Ante Rebic or Divock Origi available for selection.

One of his options is to use Alexis Saelemaekers on the left side of the attack with Charles De Ketelaere in the middle and Junior Messias on the right, with Olivier Giroud upfront as normal. That would mean sticking with the standard 4-2-3-1 formation.

A different option would be to switch to the Christmas tree formation, 4-3-2-1 and use Tommaso Pobega in a midfield three with Ismael Bennacer and Tonali. De Ketelaere and Brahim Diaz would play just behind Giroud.

This tactic was used a lot by Carlo Ancelotti when he was at Milan.

  1. Pioli does not have the courage nor tactical nuance, to play 4-3-2-1.

Maybe this is the formation, that helps bring the best of Diaz, playing closely with De Ke, and help build is confidence. Moreover, it is the perfect attacking formation for a fast pressing team like Napoli.

    1. Changing formation is not like changing your underwear…
Pioli is already using new formation 3-5-2 for some games and that was trained even before the season started.

    2. Changing formation is not easy. This isn’t video games.

All you wrote here is just pure theory. Meanwhile Pioli already experimented in training ground and directly see how it works.

So please stop acting like you’re smart and know more than Pioli do just because you used that formation in video games.
