Repubblica: Fonseca keen on keeping winger but Chiesa swap ‘cannot be ruled out’

By Isak Möller -

Alexis Saelemaekers was one of the best players for AC Milan during the pre-season and Paulo Fonseca immediately took a liking to the player. However, according to a report, a swap deal with Juventus still cannot be ruled out.

Saelemaekers returned from his loan spell at Bologna at the start of this summer and he was used heavily in pre-season. Above all, he impressed and Fonseca has praised the player multiple times, keen on keeping him for this season.

As reported by La Repubblica (via MilanNews), Thiago Motta still wants to reunite with Saelemaekers at Juventus and an attempt could be made by the club. It will likely be unsuccessful, but a potential swap deal involving Federico Chiesa ‘cannot be ruled out’ as things stand.

Chiesa isn’t part of the Bianconeri’s project anymore and he would certainly be a good signing for Milan, given his versatility in attack. Furthermore, he would take up one of the ‘association-trained’ slots on the squad list, which in turn would free up one of the main slots.

However, once again, Fonseca would like to keep Saelemaekers and could even play him from the first minute against Torino tonight.

    1. Salamakers is valued at 12mil, Chiesa is valued at 35mil. Since Chiesa is in the last year of his contract, he cant be sold for the full value. Thats why the swap makes sense. The expiring contract makes them valued roughly the same at this time.

        1. Salary, yes it can be an issue but if that hurdle can be overcome in some way then Chiesa clearly is the superior player and I have always been a fan of Saelemaekers since he arrived,

        2. We can’t just let sale go for trash that reject us in our previous attempt to sign him.sale should remain please.

      1. @rossi ,with all respect but He is valued 35 to my ass, he is valued as much as we estimate , don’t bring here prices from transfermarkt which estimates kids with 3 app. in EPL automaticaly on 40 mil €. Washed up player, i would leave him in juve one more year so he take them another 10 mil € on salary and go for him only when he is free. They should be gratefull if anyone take him for 5 mil and save them from his salary.

        1. Thats the offical valuation mate, im not the one coming up with those numbers.
Chiesa in seria A last year: 9 goals 3 assists
Sale in seria A last year: 4 goals 3 assists
Chuk in Seria A last year: 1 goal 3 assists
Leao in Seria A last year: 9goals 10assists (Just for comparison)
You see there is a reason for this valuation.
People who think Chiesa is worse than Sale or Chuk either have never watched Chiesa play or have no idea of football. Not to mention that Chiesa simmilar like Leao has the ability to take on defenders by him self.

          1. He played ST in 352 system ,sale played LW in bologna , i remember how good he was in fiorentina, but from juve i remember him just like crying baby ,i can’t compare them based just on attacking numbers,he is probably better than saele as attacker but right now saele fits more in fonseca high pressing system, also i cant stay cool with his trash charachter,if you watched him that much you know what i am talking about,he was acting like a pig to his teammates all the time, shaking his skinny hands and head for every bad cross, and lack of defensive support, there is a reason why motta wants saele instead of him, they dont know what to do with him, nobody from italy wants to pay for him and he doesnt want to go abroad, they have to pay him 10m € a year and he will sit on bench, that makes them crazy and i am enjoying it

          2. Furthermore, Chiesa can unlock the scorescreen by shooting, not to mention our weakness when it comes to attempted from a long distance Leao-Saelemaekers-Rlc-Chuku are all very poor at this exercise

  1. Even if Saelemaekers leaves, even if Milan needs another association trained player, that player cannot be Chiesa.
Unless Saelemaekers and Okafor or Chukwueze leave in the last 2 weeks, Milan has zero need of bringing Chiesa in. He makes around 5 million, wants 6 million, but he isn’t going to be a starter at Milan.
Milan should bring in another association trained player in a different position, like a LB or maybe a GK.

    1. Not going to be a starter? I think Chukwueze can say goodbye if Chiesa joins, he is superior to him in literally every possible way.

      1. No, he is not. He WAS superior to Chuk when he had good physical form which is no longer the case. He wasn’t ever the same one after his injuries. He is washed up and injury-prone, and a shadow of his former self. There is a reason why Juve wants to get rid of him. Wake up. You are thinking of the old Chiesa, not of the current Chiesa. We have excellent wingers, 5 of them, and we don’t need Chiesa. If he comes, he will play a few games and be injured the rest of the time, and his salary will create problems in the locker room. Hard pass. Let’s not help Juve to get rid of their hot potatoes.

Hey, I’ll propose this: if they want to swap Chiesa for Origi, then yes, LOL.

Saelemaekers? He is much improved after the loan. He was brilliant, just brilliant against Monza. So, no, it doesn’t make sense to swap a resurging player, young, with a bright future, for a washed up player. Let’s keep Alexis. And let’s keep Chuk. No Chiesa, please.

        1. Before you make claims like this you should actually check their numbers. It seems washed up Chiesa is still superior to in form Sale and Chuk. Also their injury record from last season is simmilar. So im not sure from where do you guys come up with this stuff.

  2. Every year we hear about these rumored swap deals, but has a single one of them ever happened? I can’t think of any, but maybe others can.

  3. Has anyone watched Chiesa after the injury? He had one good spell against ACM. Why doesn’t Juve want him? Why doesn’t he want to stay at Juve with CL ball? I think this is trouble.

  4. If saelemaekers starts today everyone will see how he actually is in a real game and swap him immediately. It’s not the first time saelemaekers has impressed and then finally gets to start and he’s an eye sore, just remember the season with messias that one would come in as a sub and play great and the next game would start and would be hard to watch. He’s a good sub. I can’t believe anyone would hesitate for a swap between him and chiesa. Milan wins that deal 10/10 times. Even if chiesa gets injured for half a season it’s still a better deal.

  5. I seriously can’t believe people are thinking saelemaekers is better than chiesa.
Juve are freezing him out because he does not want to renew in his last year, simple as that. Chiesa was their best player last year and started for italy. He’s Italy’s best player, just because juve don’t froze him out of the team doesn’t mean he’s not good anymore. Actually he can start on ANY serie a team including juventus

    1. Alexis seems much improved after the loan, like Gabbia also improved after his loan. Alexis was utterly brilliant against Monza which is a decent mid-table team. Did you watch that game? I did. Alexis played his best 45 minutes with the Milan jersey, in that game; basically every touch on the ball was great and produced something good. If (and yes, that’s an if because Alexis has been irregular before) he confirms his form in official games (friendlies are nice but they don’t prove everything), then the CURRENT Alexis Saelemaekers is better than the CURRENT Federico Chiesa, who is washed up and was never the same after his injuries. No, Alexis even the current and improved one is not better than the old Chiesa before the injuries, but that player doesn’t exist anymore. Being better than the current, washed up, damaged, injury-prone Chiesa is not that difficult, which is why Juve wants to get rid of him. Sure, there is the last season contract and his refusal to renew, but even if he had 3 years left in his contract, washed up like he is, it’s conceivable that Juve would want to get rid of him anyway.

As an Italian I love Chiesa; as a Milanista I hated to see how good he was for our rivals Juve. But that was then. Now, Chiesa is no longer a consistent threat.

The risk for Milan is to get an injury-prone player who will be a bench player, but earning a salary that will cause jealousy and locker room problems with the other players, and excessive demands when those players are up for renewal.

If Chiesa accepts to cut his salary to 3M per year and understands that he’ll be a sub with limited minutes so that maybe he doesn’t get injured again, then yes, I’d welcome him. But I don’t want Milan to sign him for a salary similar to Rafa’s, and I don’t want to lose Alexis if the latter confirms his good form. If Alexis plays as brilliantly today against Torino in an official game as he played against Monza in a friendly, and if Alexis can be consistent and continue to display his good form, then I hope Fonseca will stop the management from swapping him for Chiesa.

      1. I indeed watch the game with monza and I agree he was great. but as I said before, he’s done this every preseason with us and in official games he’s useless besides being a sub. Chiesa on a bad juve last year was their best player. Don’t forget, that allegri at one point in the beginning of the season had chiesa playing as a left wing back and then in the middle of the field before finally playing him in attack. Allegri played a formation that hadn’t suited his best player and played 11 behind the ball to scrape up 1-0 wins. Leao on juve would have been just as bad.

Yes he’s had numerous injuries but Dont let the fact of juves poor management of him make him out to be a bad player. If he came to Milan with an attacking style of football in a formation he would thrive in he would probably be the best player in serie a.

I’m tired of people comparing saelemaekers to chiesa. I’m Italian too but I’m also a die hard milan fan and I’m saying this.

        1. We’ve seen saelemaekers for three or four years now. We know he’s awesome in friendlies and in the season he will have 2-3 great games but then for the other 30 he is just an eye sore. I was also at one of the friendlies this year and he also lost the ball quite a bit when pressed. Alexis will never be a starter but he is a good sub to come in the final minutes to be a workhorse and nothing more. If he is ok with that then I am too but he should never be a starter where chiesa can play anywhere if the team suits him.

  6. So what is the meaning of this meaningless deal. Giving away one like Saela to Juve in exchange to what they (Juve) see as useless ? Chiesa is a national player just like Saela (until we made him loose his position of course). But we have the young guy going to exchange him for a worn out player like Chiesa, please this makes no sense.

  7. Wissam Ben Yedder is a free agent. He’s 34. But for the past ten seasons with Monaco, Sevilla and Toulouse he always scored double digits, often well over 20 goals season. Just an idea.

  8. Omg, who is managing Alexis? Rothschild family?!
Guy cant stop being awful, and every manager “likes what he sees”?! Come on bro .. Chiesa is Ronaldinho, when comparing the two.
