GdS: Six players for two positions – Pioli can finally call upon attacking depth

By Oliver Fisher -

After being somewhat forced into making certain selection choices last season, AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli now has some attacking depth at his disposal.

The centre-forward role is one where Milan have struggled in recent seasons, often being forced to field a player in that position who is not a natural striker given the injuries suffered, but now there are three players fighting for the spot.

Ante Rebic scored a brace in the 4-2 win over Udinese on Saturday so he staked his claim for a place as a ‘false nine’ type centre-forward, while La Gazzetta dello Sport add that Olivier Giroud and Divock Origi will provide competition as more natural No.9s.

Then there is the attacking midfielder role where Pioli really struggled to find any consistency last season, fielding Brahim Diaz there until his drop in form and then both Franck Kessie and Rade Krunic.

Now, though, La Gazzetta believes the issues are fixed. New €32m signing Charles De Ketelaere is the most obvious choice for the playmaker position when he reaches 100% in terms of condition and integration, but Brahim – with a goal and an assist against Udinese – could well have a resurgence and another new arrival in Yacine Adli certainly impressed during preseason.

  1. Where is competition for RW ? Junior vs lord saladmaker? Weka weka weka both are awful . Why not try train CDK or brahim as RW so you can field them both , it is good solution without buy new RW

    1. bruh why are you so obsessed with RW while we already have so many players who can fill those positions? Rebic and CDK can play on that position.. Pioli can rotate those players in that position.. and it’s not like we should score a goal from RW always..

  2. He’s not obsessed with the position — it’s that THIS ARTICLE didn’t address that position! He probably agrees with you that Rebic and CDK can play RW.

I certainly know for sure Rebic can be successful at RW because played there a lot for Croatia in their 4-2-3-1 during their run to the 2018 WC Finals.

But the article mentions Rebic as if he only can play as a forward and it mentions CDK as if he only can play as the central mid.

But they are both WAY WAY better than Messias and Saele — so one of those 2 players should start at RW and we leave Messias and Saele on the bench. If we wan to field the best team possible, then Messias and Saele should NOT PLAY.
